Dream Sequence: Hand-Drawn Morphing & Transformation
Creating Animated Dream Sequences: 3 Part Online Workshop on Morphing and Transformation
Dates: 24th November, 1st December, 8th December
Time: 5:00–8:00 PM (GMT)
Format: Online (3 sessions, 3 hours each) on Zoom, recordings available for one month after.
Learn how to transform one image into another, and create your own 5-second hand-drawn transformative dream sequence.
This workshop is designed for artists, animators and illustrators interested in learning the transformative, unbounded possibilities of hand-drawn animation. Over three 3-hour sessions, you will learn the fundamentals of metamorphosis while planning, animating, and colouring a short sequence in which images melt, dissolve, and transform like our dreams.
By the end of the workshop, you will have created a finished hand-drawn morph for our collective animation, and your own 5-second animated dream sequence.
Everything is drawn by hand on paper using a light box. No animation software experience is required.
If you can't join live, recordings of each session will be available for one month after the workshop, and I’ll provide personalised feedback after each session to support your work.
Session 1: Your First Transformation & the Collective Morph
24th November 5-8pm, GMT

How morphing and transformation are used in animation
Setting up your light box, paper and registration
Essential Morphing animation principles and techniques
Creating a collective hand-drawn morph
Session 2: Planning Your Dream Sequence
1st December, 5-8pm, GMT
In the second session, we will use skills learnt from the first session to plan and create our own dreamlike transformation sequences.
Topics covered:
Screening the collective morph
Dream logic and transformation in storytelling
Animation workflows and organisation
More Animation Principles
Composition and pacing
Storyboarding and animatic: planning a 5-second sequence in three or four beats
Session 3: Colouring, Exporting and collective feedback
8th December, 5-8pm, GMT
In our final session, we’ll add colour and come together to share what we have made.
Topics covered:
Colouring and colour theory
Creating a style frame
Final adjustments and exporting your animation
Group crit and final feedback
Materials & Software
You will need:
A light box (or a DIY alternative such as a window or tablet screen, and I’ll share tips)
Animation paper, plus pegs or tape for registration
Pencils
Coloured pencils, markers or watercolours
A phone with a stand or tripod, to photograph your drawings
I will recommend one free capture app and send a short guide to setting up and photographing your drawings, plus templates for the collective morph. You are welcome to send me a test frame before Session 1 so we can sort out any problems early.
The workshop is designed for hand-drawn animation on paper with a light box, or digitally if you prefer. I’ll demonstrate the techniques digitally in TVPaint so everyone can see them clearly on screen, and the same principles apply to drawing on paper. No animation software experience is required.
Community
A shared online space will be open throughout the workshop, so you can share work in progress, ask questions and support one another. By joining, you agree that your morph may be included in the collective animation, which I will share with credit to each contributor. Let me know if you would prefer to opt out.
